U.S. drones kill 7 people in Yemen

Security officials in Yemen have said U.S. drone strikes killed at least seven people in the south of the country on Thursday.

The officials said the number of those killed by at least three U.S. strikes could rise as body parts were found but not counted, according to AP.

The use of U.S. drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan has been described as “absolutely essential to our ability to defend Americans” by U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

Earlier in September, a U.S. drone strike killed 13 civilians, including three women and a child, in Yemen. The killings sparked angry demonstration in the country.

The U.S. uses its drones to target suspected militants in other countries too namely, Pakistan. On Wednesday, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik said 80% of those killed in drone attacks are innocent civilians.

Authors of a new report on the secret U.S. drone war in Pakistan, “Living Under Drones”, has concluded that U.S. drone strikes “terrorize men, women, and children giving rise to anxiety and psychological trauma among civilian community”.

The U.S. is the only country that has drones in the region as it has stepped up its deadly drone strikes in Yemen.
